Holy smokes am I excited for this! One of the most frustrating aspects of being in Perimenopause is the hot flushes. There’s nothing like sipping on a glass of vino at the end of the day, to be instantly covered in sweat and feel hotter than when you started!
Over the past 18 months, as I have been conducting my workshops, I have been conducting a human experiment on myself, and I have come to the following conclusions:
- White wine is easier to drink than red wine
- If I drink red wine, I need to drink lighter styles- tempranillo, grenache, pinot noir
- Unwooded white wine is better than oaked white wine (yes it kills me to say that as I love a great oaked Chardonnay)
- Low or zero alcohol wine and beverages reduces the potential of a hot flush DRAMATICALLY.
- Non-alcoholic Gin is the best! Yep. I don’t even drink Gin normally but I love Cedars Alt Gin.
How do I define a low alcohol wine?
Now, here in Australia, the wine industry has been embracing the big bold wine in the past 20 years. When I started in the wine industry in 2001, most wines were 12 or 12.5% Today, in 2020 it is common to get a 14.5% or 15% wine! These are seriously big wines. Even a Rose today can be 14.5%.
I’m going to be bold and challenge your notion of wine and other alcoholic beverages and the required alcohol volume. You don’t need a high alcohol volume for enjoyment. In fact, anything less than 12 % is optimal. But, the catch is that they are hard to find.
Luckily the wine industry is starting to pay attention and now you can get wines around the 6-10% that are not just sweet Moscato! And the range of non-alcoholic wines are expanding daily.
If you go to a bottle shop and speak to the manager, as I have done on many occasions with my promo job, they will tell you time and time again that the low and zero alcohol beers sell faster than they can stock them on the shelf. Really.
Also, the number one selling beverage in Dublin in 2020 is zero alcohol gin. Yep, you read that correctly.
So, I’m going to curate a selection of wines and non-alcoholic beverages that you can buy direct from my preferred suppliers, that fit my criteria of either low, no or less than 12 % alcohol.
The links will take you directly to the supplier, and the transaction will be conducted according to their liquor license and delivery operations. In return, I will receive a small affiliate commission – at no extra cost for you. It covers my time to filter through all of the wines and find the wines that fit the category as well as conduct the education so that you understand what you are getting and why it fits my criteria.
