Death is a scary word for most of us. The stuff of nightmares. It brings with it images of sculls and skeletons, grim reapers and all things black. It is a topic that we avoid at all costs. Ignoring will not make it go away. Like it or not we all die eventually. The when and why we have no control over.
Before my father died, I had almost no experience with death. I had no idea of the impact of terminal illness on a family and its supporting community. I had never considered the concept of Palliative care. His death left me with a never-ending list of questions. I want to help break through the taboo of death and get grass roots conversations going because I believe that there is a need to significantly enhance the understanding of dying, death, grief, bereavement and loss in the global community.
It’s important to understand and talk about death. Not only does it help us prepare for the inevitable, but we can choose how to transition out of this world, and communicate our last wishes. It is also important in being able to fully appreciate what we have, right now. Understanding death helps us live life to its fullest.
